How long does it take to get through the Delta Arrivals Terminal at ATL?

I will be flying into ATL-Hartsfield next Monday around 1pm and will be on a tight schedule. I will have to pick up a rental car but I don't know if I should check my bags. Can you tell me, on average, how long it takes to to get from the gate, through Baggage Claim and the car rental process? Also, would I save much time if I didn't check my luggage?
