Why? Why can't people be straightforward about who and how they are?

Just curious as to why everyone presents themselves to be things they aren't? Why say you believe in certain principles and philosophies and then act against the very same? Why explain your views if you do not live by them? I am so tired of fakes and hypocrites I would just really like an explanation regarding the difficulty everyone seems to encounter with the task of being themselves.....
